Non-Priority Soils (Westside Soils)

This Operable Unit encompasses a variety of mine dumps to the immediate west of urban Butte. The area is a popular recreation site for local residents. Recently, EPA began to refer to the site as “Westside Soils.” For most of the Superfund process in Butte, EPA referred to the site as “Non-Priority Soils.”

The future of the OU is uncertain, as it has not been addressed in any Record of Decision, and EPA currently lists the cleanup status of the site as “Study Not Begun.” Some initial scoping activities for the OU have been completed by EPA, and a Remedial Investigation is planned for 2013. The OU was not included in the 2010-2011 Five-Year Review of the Silver Bow Creek/Butte Superfund site.

There are public health concerns in regards to the area, as it is popular for local recreation. For more information on health issues related to Superfund in Butte, visit the Public Health section.
